From Home to Workplace: Discovering Belonging in Both

My favorite place for a cup of coffee with the person who knows me best—my home.

What does home mean to you?

Home, to me, is truly where my heart is. It’s the one place where I can be completely vulnerable. A place where I don’t feel the need to protect myself—where I am safe and accepted. It’s my dreaming place. It’s my place for play and silliness with my family. It’s my resting place. It’s the space that holds everything I love and care about. It’s my comfort.

It’s hard to believe, but I just completed my first two weeks of full-time employment. Prior to that, I was a full-time mom doing what full-time moms do—managing the house and the kids.

As I sit and write today, it feels like I just went through a wind tunnel of new surroundings, new faces, and new information. My brain—after five years—has woken up. It’s on fire, but in all the best ways. It’s making connections and popping with ideas.

But what I’ve learned most over this time goes deeper than simply understanding people’s roles at the company or the processes and applications we use. I’ve learned what it means to be part of a human community focused on meeting people where they are. Not changing them or correcting them, but simply meeting them in the way they choose to present themselves.

“I am accepted,” I thought. “I am valued,” I thought.

If you could read my mind, feeling accepted and valued is all I’ve ever desired. To feel that—and seethat—from my team confirmed that I am where I want to be. I want to contribute and lift up my team.

As I worked to build my learning successfully, a wise person encouraged me with this:

“Let’s chase progress over perfection. That means aiming for a little better every day—not perfect overnight. Learn something every chance you get. Occasionally find a shortcut. Rebuilding a career is a marathon, not a sprint. I promise, in a few weeks or a month, you won’t recognize yourself.”

Wow. How many of us need to hear that?

It’s okay not to know everything. I know it can feel scary and overwhelming, but just remember—you need to give yourself time to crawl, walk, and then run. All three take time and practice.

My home houses love and comfort. My workplace does too. I’m building my support system there, and it feels just right—just like home.

My Favorite Way to Make Coffee at Home!

Cozy Cup Recipe:

  • Double shot of steaming espresso
  • Foamed: one shot glass of almond milk
  • Creamy touch: one shot glass of non-dairy creamer — I love the Starbucks Non-Dairy Almond & Oat Milk Liquid Coffee Creamer

It’s simple, cozy, and the perfect start to my morning!
