Messy Counters, Full Hearts

Flour twirled through the air like soft winter snow, settling on our cheeks and drifting into little sparkling clouds. Somewhere in the background, carols were being sung with carefree cheer, and laughter echoed through the kitchen—bright, warm, and full of life. These are the December moments that linger on the heart like sugar on fingertips… the kind you wish you could bottle up and savor just a little longer.

Today, Kenton and Ruby worked at true elf-speed, mixing, rolling, cutting, baking, and decorating their Christmas sugar cookies with all the determination of Santa’s most devoted helpers. Wearing their matching aprons, they suddenly looked older—grown by a year, but somehow it felt like more.

Kenton, with his boyish grin and newfound confidence, moved with a surety that surprised me. He shaped his cookies with careful hands, asking for almost no help at all. And Ruby—her high ponytail bouncing with every excited step—seemed to have leapt forward in time overnight. She rolled out the dough with pride and pressed holiday-shaped cutters like a tiny artist at work. But when decorating time arrived, she announced, with all the seriousness in her small voice, that she was ready for a “rest.”

As my Santa vest grew dusted in flour, I paused to take in the beautiful chaos around me. The counters cluttered with sprinkles and cookie cutters. The air rich with sugar. The soft hum of carols filling the corners of our home. I breathed it all in—this delicious, fleeting moment with my two children.

The holiday season can be loud, busy, and far too quick. The rush tends to hide itself in our endless lists and expectations. But there is magic in the quiet pockets we carve out—moments of stillness where we can reflect on all we’ve done and all we have.

Make room for those peaceful minutes this season. Hold them gently. Cherish them deeply. I promise… there’s always a little time for magic.
